JTF Orion: five changes on a board holding forty-three tracks
Everything on this screen is an exercise, and the screen says so continuously: simulated units, simulated ground, no live operation. What it demonstrates is what happens when the display a commander decides on is assembled on the commander's own machine, which is the same architecture as a web page and carries the same exposure.
Five changes arrive in one repaint. A friendly element is drawn twelve hundred metres from where it is, across a wadi. A hostile element loses its motion and is reframed as a neutral one — the shape as well as the colour, because on this display colour never carries meaning alone. A platoon running low on ammunition with a casualty is reported as fully capable. A line appears in the command net thread that no station transmitted. And a troops-in-contact flash is raised at a grid where nothing is happening, which is the one alert on that display a commander is trained to act on before confirming it.
The crowd is not incidental. A sparse display defends itself: six icons on a blank map and a commander knows every one of them personally, so a symbol in the wrong place stands out. This is what a command post actually looks like — companies, convoys, aviation, a drone on task, civilian traffic, and whatever is known of the enemy, laid over routes, phase lines, boundaries and objectives — and on it a platoon marker sitting near a route, inside its own boundary, twelve hundred metres from the truth is indistinguishable from the forty-odd markers around it that are right.
Nothing reaches through the glass. No code moves a vehicle, touches the network, or enters any system, and the after-action finds a clean net record, a clean message store and a correct picture on every unit's own device. The one artifact of the whole event that does not exist is the thing the decision was made on.
